Hi,

I've been searching but can't seem to find an answer.

I am having an external wall rendered, but I am only having the bottom half rendered with the top half being the existing brick.

My concern is how to protect the exposed top edge of render from water penetration.

The plasterers I have asked suggest a stop bead with the rear joint siliconed, but I am concerned it will just be a water trap, and any deterioration of the silicon will eventually lead to water getting behind the plaster.

What I was looking for was something like a reverse bellcast bead so there would be a downward slope from the brick/render joint down to the front edge of the render. But I can't seem to find anything like this.

Any suggestions?

You could have a fillet which upper edge goes Into a raked out joint , so that the hairline crack where render meets brick is not exposed.

Ideally waterproofed render.

The trouble is , as you know, that the set up is the 'wrong' way round, ideally as you go up each layer overhangs the lower layer.

Many house plinths were done so that they stuck out - without waterproofer- and lasted for years but water finds a way in if that top edge is not protected.
