So I’m in a pickle with my wetroom. My bathroom fitters couldn’t do envelope cuts and in pulling the tiles up made multiple nicks in the Impey Waterguard tanking membrane over the Aquadec former.

Replacing the entire fleece in that area would obviously be the ideal option but will trying to remove a square metre of butyl rubber backing be a nightmare?

Could the nicks be covered with a dab of Impey’s butyl rubber sealant or would this compromise the tile adhesive?

I have tried to speak to Impey’s technical support but they will only advise option 1 for warranty purposes. I’ve given up on a warranty, I just would like to know if there’s an effective alternative that doesn’t involve trying to take it up.

Thanks for any advice.

Okay, so for anyone else with this problem, I decided to bite the bullet and take up the membrane. It came up better than expected.

The internet will tell you to use a heat gun but I found peeling it back brought more of the butyl rubber backing off. With the heat gun most of it wanted to stay on the shower former, so I’d say the colder the room is the better.

It took some effort pulling it back so I gently sliced through the fleece membrane to make smaller sections. Once off I dabbed at the rubber side of the discarded membrane on the rubber that was still left on the former (like using tape to get cat hairs off a sweater! That got most of it off.
White spirit and stockingette cloth got the rest off.

From start to finish it took about 90 minutes to do a square metre.

Now I’ve just got to replace it…
