Replacing fan in bathroom. Bought new fan but when connecting up there are only 2 inputs live and neutral. There are 3 ends of wire colours black grey and brown. When connected the brown to live terminal the fan came on when power connected. Don't want this as want it to come on with light. Connected the grey instead to live & fan comes on & off with light switch. Is it ok to leave brown live wire unconnected or what should be done with it?

Your old fan was a timer fan. Better to return the new fan and get the proper type. Especially if the bathroom does not have an alternate means of ventilation.

If you are happy for the fan not to run on (and suffer the consequences of mould, smells, etc) then put the unused perm live wire in a bit of insulated terminal block. Then it will be there when - in the future- you eventually buy the right fan.

Timers aren't a necessity if you do have a natural form of ventilation. We have the fan on while having a shower, it gets rid of most of the steam but on a cold day it does get a bit misty in there. Once done we just fling the window open and shut the door. Within an hour the walls are dry and nothing steamed up.

Cheers. We have a large window. That was the plan. Thanks for reply
