After pfaffing around for ages looking at various new internal doors we opted for Howdens Primed Grained white doors. Eighf in all. Grateful if someone could give me some pointers on how best to paint them. We will stick with white.

My specific questions are:

Do I need to give them another coat of primer?

Normally I would go with an oil based paint. Is this suitable for this type if door or would water based or acrylic be better?

I've used Dulux Trade oil based satinwood on the frames. Would this (in either its solvent based or water based forms) be suitable? If not what would be a better alternative?

Would a roller be better than a brush?

Grateful for any advice. Thanks.

No idea.

They haven't arrived yet.

But in the meantime I am always happy to hear other people's experiences of painting them.

No need for primer.

I personally sand those kind of doors with 180-240 grit first, it helps to eliminate the slight texture left after the factory finish. I would recommend a coat of white oil based undercoat. The white they spray the doors with is often an off white. If you are using a decent undercoat such as Dulux Trade, one coat should suffice.

Application? I prefer a brush, and ultimately you are going to have to use one to get the paint into the thin gaps in between the vertical strips.

I start by painting those gaps first and then use a lint free cloth dipped in white spirit to wipe away the excess on the outer face. If you don't do that by the time you start painting the outer face you will find that the excess paint will drag and leave a slight ridge. I normally use the Scott paper towels.

They aren't cheap, but they don't leave fibres behind. That said, the 3 roll packet in the Amazon link is extremely good value and only slightly more expensive than I normally pay for one roll. - Anyone reading this in the future- £10.6 for 3 rolls Vs £8.79 for one roll.
