Bloody good invention though, I like that.
(Not only because I've backed into two of the things in my illustrious driving career. I can vouch for the fact that they don't give much. One was a telegraph pole. Same result.)

Yeah, I made friends with a tree once. Front O/S tyre went bang going round a bend and I sailed into a tree.
The tree was mildly perturbed, the car a little more so....

Fair play to the guy! Amazing that the air bag in the steering wheel didn't deploy (did it have one?). But if you think that lamp posts are a threat in a car - they are much more of a threat to you when riding motorbikes...
Worse than a head-on with a steel lamp post has to be a side on collision with one of the old reinforced concrete lamp posts. I've seen the aftermath of that a few times over the years with cars nearly cut in two and the lamp post bent over in the middle on top of the car. Nasty
