I need to work on my legs

Is there a bodybuilder above 6 foot tall? It often seems to be compensatory.

I've nothing against short blokes, and hardly notice whether someone is tall or short, but some seem to get deeply affected by it, and develop muscles and/or attitude that are bigger than necessary.

Training in the early days is low weight between 8 and 12 reps, 3 sets. If the weight is correct then after rep 12 you should feel like like you can rep to 14.
Wrong.
Training must start with aerobic workouts in order to create more capillary ramification in the muscle.
So light weight or no weight at all and at least 30 reps x 4 or 5 sets.
For former athlete restarting after a period of inactivity, even higher number of reps (50/75/100).
After a (standard) 6 week period of "capillarisation", muscle build up (anaerobic) can safely start.
That's when you put more weight, reduced reps and muscles grow in size.
Piramid training is very effective at building up strength, stamina and definition all at once.
Weight must be adequate to reach last set without affecting the correct movement of the exercise.
Example:
20 reps 20kg
15 reps 25kg
12 reps 30kg
10 reps 35kg
8 reps 40kg
6 reps 45kg
Then go back down in weight and up in reps
8 reps X 40kg
10 reps x 35kg
12 reps x 30kg
15 reps X 25kg
20 reps x 20kg

Better start with a lower weight than you think is adequate.
