ideal elan 2 boiler RS40 LOUD NOISE PROBLEM

My boiler has started to make a louder than normal noise, almost like a kettle boiling, over the last 2 days. i initially thought it was a fan problem but after dismantling the boiler unit, there was no fan on this model. Also the water pump which was replaced 2 years ago,is very hot to touch? Is this normal?
Can anyone help?

You may have a shortage of water.

Checl the header tank has not frozen up or is empty!
