Ideal Logic+ combi grinding noise

Hello everyone, We have been having some issues with our 8 year old Ideal Logic+ combi boiler.

A year ago or so it was loosing flame during CH so we had the ignition electrode and flame sensing electrode replaced by a gas engineer. It seemed to have fixed the problem then.

Now we have a different problem - occasionally the boiler makes a grinding noise. I managed to capture it on a video below. This is what we observed:
- it happens during CH (can wake us up in the night)
- grinding noise for around 5 seconds (on the video the noise was longer than usual)
- slight gas smell when it happened with front cover opened
- display sometimes shows 'Flame loss' but it recovers by itself and starts to heat normally

The boiler in general works normally and we do not need to reset it or anything like that.

I am looking for an advice in here - what's the rough cost of fixing this? Or would I be better off replacing the boiler?
I have been already charged £300 to have the electrodes replaced.

you should not be removing the cover on that boiler and you should certainly no be replacing the parts that you already have, get a registered engineer in to service it and stop messing around with it , it is against site rules to advise you on this, and for very good reason

hi Ian,

Just to clarify - the boiler is maintained yearly by a qualified gas engineer, he unfortunately does not specialise in fixing boilers. I do have all the paperwork for this.
As far as the electrodes are concerned - we `had them` replaced by a gas company. They charged me already almost £300 for doing so. I guess you see now why I am bringing up this issue in here.

I am looking for information what can be wrong and what does it take to fix it. Am I better off trying to buy a new boiler or should I be looking to have it fixed?

These are great boilers, they must not be used with the cover off, please get someone in who knows what they're doing to sort it out for you.

How could it is great if it costs almost 40% of new boiler value to replace a consumable part. If you knowledgable, would you be so kind and advise me if fixing my problem is cost effective? :)
 
Boiler parts are priced in the same fashion as car parts, ie; expensive.

I would need to be in front of your boiler to diagnose the exact fault.

A new boiler costs around £1000, so you are saying you need a £400 repair, don't forget that may include someone's time coming to diagnose, fetch part, and fit.

Please remember all gas engineers earn a million pounds a day.........

I'm not letting you into my home while my family is in, this is due to the obvious virus risk. Can't you asses the problem remotely like most people try nowadays? :)
I'd make sure my family is out of the house before any 'gas engineer' comes in.

But seriously, does it looks like fan issue? Or more like the flue issue?
Flue issue might need scaffolding and this is different ball game.

You say you're concerned about your family's safety, yet you're running the boiler with the casing removed in direct contravention of both gas safety regulations and the boiler's manual, which states "THE BOILER MUST NOT BE OPERATED WITHOUT THE FRONT PANEL FITTED". Did you ensure they were out of the house when you did this, or is putting them at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning acceptable to you? This sounds like a combustion problem so there's a very real risk that this is happening.

Since you've removed the cover, the Regulation 26.9 checks now need to be carried out before the boiler is operated again. Your Gas Safe Registered engineer can do this for you while they're diagnosing the problem. Preferably use a different one to the one who charged you £300 for electrodes though, because that sounds excessive
