when boiler fires up theres a loud bang as main burners fire up i was told by a heating engineer that its normal for this boiler? funny it did not do it in the past. I think it could be the control valve any help?
I expect that he did not want to get involved with an old boiler when he did not really know what the cause was and realised it might be an expensive repair if he changed the gas valve.
Without seeing the boiler I cannot guess what the problem is. It might just need a proper service.
ideal Concord, Sound old boilers, probably just need a Good service, pilot could be partially blocked (small flame), the main burner bars could be linted, I would be suprised if a full service by an Experienced service engineer didn't restore the old'n to its former glory
Happy days
