Is that actually still the case? AFAICS, most calipers around these days have similar resolution to micrometers (generally 0.01mm for 'standard' instruments) and, of course, many have the advantages of being able to measure over greater distances and, sometimes, internal as well as external dimensions.A micrometer with which you could measure 1 strand is one thing, but a vernier calliper gauge is a pretty basic tool.
