Hello,

I want to repaint my kitchen in water based emulsion. I understand that different undercoat should be used if the existing base is oil or water based. How can I tell what type of paint is already in my walls? It's glossy, but that doesn't tell me if it's oil or water based.

Thanks for your help.

its pretty unlikely that your walls were painted in oilbased paint. kitchens are generally painted with either soft sheen or acrylic eggshell which is 'glossy' as you say (helps repell water). get a sanding pole from b&q and give it a good sand down then recoat with either of the paints i mentioned above.

good luck
