I'm helping a semi retired builder on a house he's building for himself and were at 1st fix stage and want to do some prep for possible satellite and TV cabling.

basically its up a communal lane on a private development of 4 houses, There will be a bt line coming in and there is a virgin media junction box at the top of the lane so we're thinking that rather than limit the options in the future bring them all in.

He wants sky+ on only 1 tv on the 3rd (top) floor, all the others will just be freeview with standard coaxial cables.

We can run the satelite cable to the tv where sky+ will be but what about virgin media? can we pre wire it? Any advice or basic outline of how these are installed would be great.

Rather than limit just 1 tv to Sky, you could use a distribution amp to feed the signal throughout the house.

The wiring for this would be:

1) TV aerial into back of Sky box
2) TV out of sky box to distribution amp
3) Distribution amp to multiple TVs

You can then have a magic eye on each TV to control Sky from that room.

Keep the amp in the loft and just run coax from loft to each tv point, and make sure you get decent cable too.

If you're running the Sky cable from the dish to the box, make sure you feed 2 cables or you won't be able to use Sky+ properly.

I'm sure you'd only be able to get Virgin to cable up to the house if you subscribed; maybe you could nab an installer if you keep your eyes peeled in the local area??
