immersion heater smells !!

Have just moved into new house, boiler is giving plenty of hot water from cylinder but when immersion is switched on it starts giving off a slight burning smell ! Does the immersiom need changing or is there another prolem ?

For sure very dangerous, went to a house that had one that had caught fire to the room... Switch it off and don't use
 
Very likely it is a loose connection in a screw terminal, either in the switch or the imersion heater head. this causes the copper to overheat and burn away. Or it might be a damaged cable.

Cable which had been damaged, including by heat, has to be replaced or repaired with a permanent (not screwed) joint.

Do you have the skills to investigate safely yourself?

You don't need professional help to isolate at the switch and, preferably, also the consumer unit, then remove the cover from the I.H. and examine the connections.

And the same thing with the switch on the wall.
