Hi everyone, I live in SW London in a 2nd floor Art Deco period flat, and due to proximity to flight path into heathrow find aircraft noise wakes me up sometimes. We live in Richmond 8 miles from Heathrow so we're not right underneith the planes but I am a light sleeper.
I have had 2 quotes so far for a new window (width 180cm height 120 cm) just for my bedroom. As it's second floor both quotes include errecting a scaffold to install.
Quote 1 = specialist period window firm, steel framed double glazed unit with handle, not laminated, price is £1800 including installation & VAT
Quote 2 = local firm who said the 1st quote was technically inferior as it only had a handle, not proper shooting bolts, and as the glass wasn't laminated it wasn't designed to reduce noise. They quoted for a period slimline aluminium lamiated unit £2300 including VAT & installation and said this was sufficiant to reduce aircraft noise in my flat as they know the local area well (been there 35 years), or £2800 for the hardcore accoustic version but he said that was only really for people living much closer to the flightpath or on major roads.
I am a very light sleeper and would rather not take a chance that it won't fully reduce the noise, the question is more are these prices total rip offs, as other quotes on here seem to be £7000 for c.15 windows etc!
I guess if the unit was uPVC I'd expect it to cost maybe £600 then say £400 for scaffold and maybe £500 for installation, that's £1500, so this is £800-£1300 more for the aluminium frame and the sound reduction depending on which one I go for...
Any thoughts or opinions please? I don't mind paying for quality but don't want to pay over the odds....
