laying indian sandstone at the moment , and thinking what to make the steps from

thinking about laying two tiered courses of 4" concrete blocks laid on their side infilled with concrete and then clad with the same sandstone i have already have cut into brick size pieces and jointed up.

any one done this before ? whats best to stick the small slabs on with normal mortar or a cement based tile adhesive ?

There are 2 ways to do it, either you lay the tread flag first and then sandwich the riser cladding between that and the next tread flag in this case normal mortar will do.

The other is to clad the step riser first and butt your tread against it (with a mortar joint though) in that case your going to need to stick it on with tile cement.

Its just an aesthetic choice which way you reckon looks better.
