As long as boards are staggered so no two corners align and the edges finish in the centre of joists, what difference, if any, is there if plasterboards are installed on a ceiling in the same direction as the joists run (i.e. longest side of the plasterboard runs parallel with the joist) or across the joists?

Likewise, on stud walls, is there anything wrong about installing plasterboards upright if the ceiling height is 2.4m or less?

Ceiling: The main problem would be if the butted ends do not have a good fixing spaces on the noggins, as they are not bonded like the the long sides are and could start to sag.

Walls: By upright you mean floor to ceiling 2400mm no joints or do you mean like brick pattern?

You can do both
