I would like to insulate behind the present drylining of a 1920s single brick external wall (with external rendering). Can this be done? How? Also, how can I insulate under the suspended floorboards where there is about 70cm drop to a gravel/stone/soil surface.

Some insulation firms will fill voids behind plasterboard but it's full of pitfalls, fouling cables etc it also requires relatively large holes to be cut in your plasterboard to blow it in. Also you may not have a vapour barrier and could get condensation problems. Sorry its so gloomy.

The best option would be to pull off the plasterboard fix celotex type insulation and re fit the boards and then either tape and joint it or skim it properly which is far superior in my opinion.

As for the floor it can easily be done from underneath if you have that much room although it's not a particularly pleasent job. You can use the same rigid board type or you can use mineral wool but it needs netting etc to hold it in place.

"Making significant changes to thermal elements (walls ,roofs or floors) would normally require Building Regulations approval and require the thermal insulation of the element to be upgraded to a reasonable standard."

Oh dear, I thought that might be the case. Thanks for the information - at least I know the direction I need to be thinking along.
