Yes, normal cement won't really affect the copper anyway. If it being encased in cement/concrete you nead something thicker to allow for expansion/contraction.
Basically i want to protect the pipe from hardbacker because there is one small section where the board is going to go very close if not be just touching the pipe (due to uneven wall), so want to be extra safe.
