We have just had a kitchen installed, it's from Howdens so all cabinets are standard sizes.

The integrated fridge we ordered to go as a base unit was this one from AEG: http://www.johnlewis.com/230722419/Product.aspx

You have probably spotted my mistake already. The fridge door is full length so of course the cabinet door is too short as it's cut to allow a plinth to run underneath.

Is there anyway of making this fridge fit into a base unit nicely (we'd really like the extra space it offers) or am I going to have to swallow the cost and return it to the online retailer?

There are a variety of unit sizes to hold appliances and variety of appliance types, built in , built under, integrated, semi integrated and free standing.
The fridge you purchased in not intended for below counter installation.
