I'm installing a recessed triple shower valve and have discovered the internal walls are quite thin.

On cutting them open it looks like three sheets of plasterboard, no joists.

House was built 2003.

Is this common?

Yes, I was shocked to see this in a new built when looking for studs to fit a tv bracket.
Although, this one was 4 layers of plasterboard.

My stepson asked me to chase out 15mm cables for his towel rail in a building of a similar age. From memory- I was surprised to find that the wall was three sheets of plasterboard glued together. The walls were framed with 25*25mm timber at the top and bottom, to which the exterior skins of plasterboard were screwed (to stop the wall falling over if somebody leaned on it).

I should have twigged as soon I saw how shallow the door liners were. I naively started drilling 3mm holes looking for the studs, and discovered none over a distance of about 1m.

Seriously carp (sic) build quality.
