Hi
Some of my internal door hinges are rusty and need replacing. The problem is they seem to be an unusual size - 4" by 2". The doors themselves are only about 1.4" wide.
Does anyone know if I can still buy hinges this size?
What size would be the best alternative, without cutting new recesses?
Also, what would be the best metal to avoid future rusting?
Thanks for any advice.

Best metals to avoid rusting are solid brass or stainless steel. 1.4inches? Do you mean 1-3/8in (or 35mm)? A fairly common thickness in Victorian terrace houses round here. They were often hung on narrow 3in cast hinges (76 x 50mm), but I haven't been able to get them for years - instead I've found that architectural ironmongers (NOT general ironmongers or DIY sheds/shops) can supply them in stainless steel in 3in, 3-1/2in and 4in sizes, although you may well have to ring around a bit to find them (these people being mainly specialist trade don't tend to run detailed web sites)

Thanks for the helpful responses.
The doors are 1 - 3/8 inches wide. They seem quite lightweight, and cheaply made. I live in the north of Scotland, so I don't know if sizes are different here, but I have not been able to get any similar ones locally.
I have emailed ironmongerydirect, to see if they have any suggestions. I have not seen lift off hinges before. They do look like a good idea.
Thanks once again.

I don't know how old your house is, but I expect 100x50mm would be near enough.

If the old ones are rusting, I guess they are pressed steel, not iron, and neither painted nor bzp.

Rust suggests your house is, or has been, damp or you are near the sea. Brass will go green from salt spray, stainless will last better but there is a special grade of stainless for marine use.

I am about half a mile inland and use the ordinary grade of stainless (A2) but the marine grade is called A4. I have used both the brushed stainless hinges and the PVD brass plated stainless from ironmongerydirect, they are both lasting well, even on my outdoor gate and shed. The PVD ones are still bright and haven't tarnished like solid brass does. I have a friend who lives near the shore and suffers much worse from rust and corrosion.

No luck with the 4" x 2" size. 76mm x 51mm seems like the best bet. I didn't realise that the hinges were so unusual.
Thanks once again.

I have just ordered some stainless steel 75 x 50mm from ironmongerydirect. By the way, you were right JohnD. I do live by the sea.
