Internal wall insulation - thinnest, latest, best approaches?

I’ve considered external insulation, sure. It’s clearly the best option for thermal qualities and avoiding condensation. But it’s a big expensive job that needs to be done all at once and would be a bit odd on my Victorian semi if my cranky neighbour refused to also do it. I don’t live in a conservation area or anything, but I think red brick Victorian houses look good and it’s a bit of a shame to change how they look in a way that is essentially irreversible.

You’re right about most trades not being up to speed on this stuff. I have no idea how this country will get anywhere near our targets for domestic energy efficiency when there’s such a skills gap.

In theory I could DIY it, yes, but the house is quite tall and I would brick it (pun intended) and there’s some guttering, waste and soil pipes that would need moving. A big, challenging DIY job.
