interrupted dialling tone on BT line

It bleeps, as if there is a message stored, but when I dial 1571, there isn't one.

it may be relevant that we had a foreign visitor who used a dial-up modem connection, I think she might have disabled call waiting or something.

Anyone know what it might be and how to reset it?

Have you got something else, like call diversion or call barring (accidentally) enabled?
