Wife got some Christmas stockings with flashing LED lights and the battery box had fell off easy to solder back on. The + on battery box could only connect to - on battery did not notice to second one so told wife to pass back to me and quickly swapped wires so red is + but batteries got warm and did not work so swapped again. Yes black was +

What was more surprising no damage and all worked.

A lot of the Chinese stuff I've seen is based on the American way of doing things, it's common to find US screw threads, wiring colours, cables rated in AWG etc.
Given that black is always live or "hot" in American mains wiring, it wouldn't surprise me to find that idea copied into battery operated items from China.
