My boiler is downstairs in the garage so the pump pumping up I guess would make sense

by what i can see of that pick is the pump is pumping upwards, t to the pipe with the arrow on and red gate valve, then t to the white motorised valves.
if thats right yes thats the bypass. count the number of turns to close it then you can put it back later.
