Is this a roof problem; what is likely cause?

Our 70s built house has a flue rather than a chimney. This serves the fireplace in our front lounge. In the main bedroom above the lounge, we recently noticed some minor discoloration of the wallpaper. Yesterday, after a heavy storm, the discoloration was more spread and serious, though it has dried out since.

I shall not be diying, but would like some idea, what may be the source, the cure and any other advice you can give. Please!

cerclebois, good evening.

From your description of a flue not a Chimney, there is a good possibility that the Flue will be sealed to the roof tiles with a "Boot" made of a flexible material and possibly a lead type flashing.

If the Flue has been in place since 1970 then wear and tear will possibly have taken its toll.

Can you get into the loft space [if there is one?]

if you have access to a digital camera with a Zoom facility can you please post images of the external Flue, and use the Zoom to get "Close Ups" of the flashing around the interface of Flue and Roof?

Ken.

It's not clear if you are associating the leak with the flue. But if you are you've probably got flue blocks and a faulty terminal, ridge or lead slate - depending on the arrangement on the roof.

If it's work on the flue, then you need a Gas Safe engineer not a roofer.
