I want to be able to switch on certain plug sockets (ie lamps) from a wall light switch, but I don't wish to re-wire the room. Is there an easy way to replace the wall switch with one that "talks" to the plugs that the lamps are plugged into?

Your problem will likely be that your light switch probably only has a live and switched live wire and no neutral. Without a neutral wire I don't think you will be able to do much from the actual light switch to be able to control anything but that light.
