Hi

We are in the process of buying an 1970's ex council, mid terrace, house in the yorkshire dales. We have found these cables running through the house, side to side. Is it telephone as it doesn't look right to be electrical? The current owner doesn't know and neither does her ex husband.

Many thank
Adam

Ask the neighbours eitherside if the cables are going through into their loft space.

Brown cable into silver box

At first glance it looks like it might be a distributed TV and/or radio system. If there is one TV aerial for the whole terrace then the signal from it will be amplified and fed along the cable to all houses. The silver bos is probably the tapping point. The thicker cable goed from house to house. the thinner cables to TV aerial sockets in your house.

If there is no aerial on the terrace then it may be a cable distributed system such as http://www.rediffusion.info/

Other cables may be mains

The text says "Antiferecce" looking at the original picture on my phone, if this helps.

Thank you for all the help so far. I cannot remember seeing a TV arial on the roof but will look again at pictures.

Adam.

Hey guys, going back to the original topic its been identified that the black cable is a TV distro system probably old and now obsolete rediffusion, but does anyone know what the smaller grey cable would be for as I'm curious? Its a shame we didn't see inside that junction box which itself looks relatively modern.

Telephone? Burglar alarm system? I wouldn't worry too much. No reason not to buy the house. Sort it out if needed when you move in.

@ the OP, absolutely no reason not to buy the house i am just curious what the cable would be for, if you do buy the house and find out please let us know :)
