No visual feedback at all, just a switch with a red light on top that doesn't light up when I flick it up or down.

It's ON. When red is not visible it's OFF
It doesn’t light up. As Tezza says. If you can see the red bit then the switch is on!

Switch directions can be confusing 
Traditionally in Britain, down was on, this is still the case with lightswitches, FCUs, DP plateswitches, Switched sockets etc.
However on devices designed to European standards, particularly the Din-rail mount devices (MCBs, RCDs, RCBOs, switch disconnectors) used in modern CUs, down is off.
Even more confusing is the retro-fit MCBs for wylex standard units, which seem to follow the European convention, even though the main switch on the unit usually follows the british convention.
