Is working for the council as a plumber a good job?

I wouldn't think the job is particularly demanding, it seems to take them all day to change a pair of taps in my village, anything massive, like changing a rad seems to need 2 of them:rolleyes:

Waw, usually its at least 3!! Especially if a light bulb needs replacing!

It's the flexibile working a holidays that appeals. Would like to Finnish earlier on a Friday and I think can possibly do the 37 hours over 4 days now and again

Also you mentioned alot are now housing associations not the council this one is still the council. Is that a plus point?

Unsure really, it can be a good thing as they’re still part of the government.

What are the housing associations that took over the councils are they not government owned any more private companies?

My father worked for the local authority as a plumber for over 20 years, he liked it because unlike his previous job he wasn't pressurised by a penny pinching business owner to finish each job quickly, do a substandard job using cheap / inferior materials, or cut corners.

There wasn't any paperwork involved, other than filling in a timesheet. He could do voluntary evening and weekend 'standby' cover and got paid even if he wasn't called out, plus a bonus if he was. And he could use the van to travel to / from home when on 'standby' but it wasn't allowed to be used for personal journeys.

It was simple maintenance work though, nothing much really to get his teeth into; new heating systems and complete refurbishments were handled by outside contractors, but as he got older, he liked that it was simple work. He met some characters too, and had a few frequent fliers. There were some scruffy houses, most were OK though. But he did have to fix the local authority public loos when they were vandalised...but I don't think there are many of them left now.

He had a great final salary pension too don't know if that's still the case, but we're going back a few years now. Sadly he died at 64 before he took it, but my mother made good use of it.

Thanks I'm thinking of giving it ago due to the possibility of career progression and the large holiday allowance.

You won’t know unless you try. @tomsim i believe has recently started with one, mine used to be one, but they became a housing trust (social housing) and I’ve had some bullying managers and we now have some lackadaisical managers. My manager is ok as he was on the tools when I started.
Is your place still unionised?
