Joist issure with Walk In Wardrobe in loft space?

Apologies again, I understand that I can use 5x2 rather than 6x2 to reduce the height lost, but with the necessity for more joists.

My point is that I do not fully understand the terminology when saying

400mm centre using 6"X2"

by saying '400mm centre', is that the distance between the centre of two joists?
