Hello all,

Have just recieved my loft conversion drawings from the architect.

Can anybody explain to me / help me with the following.....

The span that the new joists have to cover, from steel to steel is approx 5.4m.
The S.E. has specified 4x2 joists.... spanning 3m.
So, as there's a load bearing wall in the middle of the house, I'm assuming the new joists sit on this? Theres no mention of this in the plans.
If so, should the 3m joists be bolted together where they overlap above the wall??
If this is correct (so far...) Should I put the steels in at a height to match the wall?? (No mention in plans of where to put the steels in height-wise)

Joists would definitely have to sit on the internal load bearing wall.. as for the level of the steel, well your architect should be providing details you can build to if he isnt then ask its what you paid him for..

As you can see (I hope..) from the picture, the drawings a bit vague to say the least.
I honestly assumed (naively?) the drawings would be full of measurements, to the mm.
You get what you pay for I suppose.... and his was the cheapest quote.

Any clue, before I ask him, as to how the joists join in the middle?
 
Easiest would be to stagger the joists over a wall plate (a 50x100 C16 timber on top of the internal wall)..

Yer the plans do look a little basic.. actually they look more like SE drawings than Architects.. as they reference pages in the calcs for beams etc..

Do you intend to do the work yourself then?

Parts of it, yes.
But only with the aid of a couple of builder friends.

Structural side, I intend to help with the lifting + heaving, but leave the decision making to others.

Insulation, flooring, plasterboarding...etc will be down to me.
No doubt aided along the way by a million questions on here... ;)

Thanks in advance....

4x2 dont sound big enough..to me.. I used to use 6x2.. stop the floor bouncing when your walking around.. reguards with the overlap, I used to use 6" nails..( nothing was said by the b.i )

the steel dont have to be the same height as the load bearing wall,, just use joist hangers..
 
there are many on here that state that you should not employ an architect... just a technician..

saves money and will pass building control....

but they have to ask the basic of questions..

pay peanuts etc....
 
My bad!!! I meant 6x2, Not 4x2.

Still the same issue though. No mention of joists sitting on wall, or how...

Other issues found so far (with my untrained eye) include.......

#1. No mention of how to join the purlin wall to the rafters

Spoke to B.C.O., said to use 2 bolts, or birdmouth,
......any preference??.

#2. Height to attach trimmer to UC.

probably not really an issue, i just thought it would/should have
been noted down.

#3. If joists span from steel to middle wall. What do i do with the joists
that run between the trimmer and the start of the wall (no wall to
rest on, landing below)

Turn the joists round?? Run short ones from trimmer to joist off
hangers?

Methinks I need a chat with the architect.........
