can i safely install a single built in electric oven directly underneath
a gas hob, inside a mdf purpose designed oven unit.
i read somewhere that due to gas safety this is not possible and that
hob should never be fitted directly above electric oven.
i have seen lots of examples of hob and oven combinations fitted under and
above in display/showroom fitted kitchens.

It's the norm to fit hob above oven , gas or electric.Just observe manufacturers recommendations for dimension.

If the hob is gas then make sure the supply feeding it is solid copper pipe as opposed to flexi-hose type. Other than that yes, no probs with installing as such, as other poster stated.
