kitchen ceiling

Hi everyone. I have lived in my house for over 20yrs and have no money to spend on it and it is in disrepair. However one thing that has always bugged me is the fact that there is wallpaper on the kitchen ceiling. Besides it being a fire hazard I don't like it. I am afraid to pull it down in case the ceiling comes down with it. I have no reason to think it will. Perhaps if I stood on a step ladder and felt the ceiling to see if it felt spongey (that idea has just come to me). Any advise will be greatfully received.

Could be a can of worms.

If the paper is textured then it is likely that the paper was used to hide "things".

At a minimum you might need to line it.

Lining ceilings is easy though.
