In our kitchen we have a double plastic faced light switch, one switch operates main light the other switch operates the under cupboard lighting.
we are wanting to change the face plate for a chrome one but when i removed the plastic one i noticed only one earth wire exists (the one for the under cupboard switch drop) would this single earth be adequate on its own to to attatch to the new chrome face plate to earth it properly.
Also we were thinking of replacing the main fluorescent strip light with main down lighters rated at 50w each (about 8 intotal) , would it be possible to wire these in series to and from each other after connecting the main single lighting wire that went into the strip light into a 5a junction box and then from here to the first spotlight then in series to each of the other spotlights.
any info most greatful.

p.s. i know about part p and i am going to employ an electrician to do the lighting work but i was just curious about series wiring.

seeing as you will not be doing it, why worry? but if you really want to know, look in for refence

thanks for your reply, i will be replacing the switch face plates myself and regarding where you have said look in for reference about the series wiring i am quite new to this site so not sure how to get into this

regards

if the cable for the room light has no earth incorperated in it i.e. just red and black, then your lighting circuit may well be old and have no earth. if this is the case you should not fit any metal switches or sockets to it. the cable with the earth is doing nothing, probably just new cable with an earth that was used when the underlights were added

thanks for your reply fireman 22. the earth in the cable for the under cupboard lighting circuit is actually wired into the earth terminal at the consumer unit so would it be possible to add chrome face plate and just use this single earth to the face plate.

cheers !

yes that would be fine then, make sure you have earths at other points around your house if you intend to use metal plate switches tho
