I’d appreciate some advice regarding a poorly 1970s wall.
I’ve been gutting a bathroom, which had tiles on tiles in some sections, which has been a bit of a mare to remove.
as far as I can see there is a layer of skim which is quite flaky and comes off easy in some areas. The render is more solid, although some chunks have come off most of it doesn’t crumble/break in hand.
there are a couple of damp damaged sections (under shower tray) where the render was reduced to sludge and brickwork is exposed.
I’ve plastered small sections before but not a room like this.
my plan is to hack off the flaky skim where it comes away easily, patch up the render with a coarse coat then reassess. Depending on how bad it is I might have a crack at re-skimming or might tile over the new render? (The plan had been to paint some sections but I accept tiles might be better).
is this plan reasonable? should I take all the skim off or just the loose sections? Does the whole render need off?
