just about to knock out livingroom to hall wall. i know it is not a supporting wall because it only carries the joists for bedroom above but am not sure on what to support it with. does it have to be a steel rsj or could i get away with a timber say 8" x4"? any ideas out there will be appreciated cheers

always go for steel rsj, with over a 150mm end bearing.... & double staggered plasterboard to give u a min. 30 minutes fire protection

What? It carries weight, but you don't regard is as being a supporting wall? In which case why are you contemplating an RSJ?

Why are you not consulting a builder, and/or the LABC?
