Over the past few weeks I have had knocking on the cold water inlet to a bathroom toilet. It is getting worse with time. The knocking happens randomly and not when the tank is refilling. There is a on/off valve near the inlet and when this is switched off, the knocking stops. Any ideas?

Might be the ballcock (if it is a syphon flush) bouncing if you have high cold water pressure to this valve. Is it happening when / after some other cold water outlet has opened and closed ? High pressure difference in toilet inlet as this other outlet is opened / closed may cause the bounce. Try turning your cold water stop cock down to reduce the pressure if this is likely to be the case.
