A process called "stick framing" ensures the easy repair of a hole in a ceiling.

You need to cut a piece of wood (use a 2" x 2") slightly longer than the width of the hole. This piece will rest atop the ceiling and it will act as a support. Insert the wood into the hole. Lay it across the centre of the opening. Use drywall screws to attach the wood to the ceiling on either side of the hole. If there are supports to your ceiling available, attach the piece of wood to them.

Measure carefully and cut a piece of drywall the same size as the hole. Use drywall screws to secure the drywall to the 2" x 2" support. The drywall piece should fit tightly, like a puzzle piece into a puzzle. Completely cover hole (go a few inches around each side) with fibre tape. Plaster over the tape to flatten everything out. Sand the wall to prepare for finishing.

another way you could do it is by dusting off and slightly damping down the top of the plaster board and either put a few dollops of bonding plaster or expanding foam down and then drop down a piece of plasterboard on top and allow to set. then fill the hole underneath with either bonding slightly less than flush with the cieling then fill the final 1-2 mill with filler. Or spray the the new piece of plasterboard with expanding foam and when set, knife it of slightly less then flush, then fill the final 1-2 mill with filler. this will fill the hole nice, flat, smooth and flush but you may get a hairline circular crack, if that is not acceptable then fill the hole flush as described with bonding then tape over the area with scrim tape and scim the cieling with multi finish after uni-bonding for the perfect finish.
If the cieling has floorboards above then cut the piece of plaster board in half making sure it overlaps above the hole and jiggle into place, then force the bonding or foam up and between the plasterboard and old cieling.
