Hello!

As per the photo I have pulled out our fireplace and old hearth taking it back to the brick, there is now a gap between the hardwood floor and the concrete underneath

My provisional plan was to order a made to measure T shaped hearth and slot that in. It looks as if I first need to fill that gap with cement making it flush to the hardwood floor? I've not used cement before so wondering if this bit is beyond me and I should get someone in...

Yes, just chuck some mortar in, 5:1 mix, buy a ready made tub that you just add water to if you don't want to measure it out yourself.
Go easy when adding water, too little and a stiffer mix is probably best for this application.

Bring it slightly lower than the wood, then when fitting the hearth, use several generous dabs of mortar and gently lower the hearth onto it

You would be wise to order the hearth in two pieces as they can be tricky to fit and are easy to break.
One inside the opening and one outside, flush with the wall. Fill the join with a bead of silicone. Black fire resistant silicone is available.

If it overhangs the wood by 5mm or so then it will just sit 'floating' on the wood and look tidy.

Thanks so much! Will get that in and give it a crack, I'll let you know how it goes
