I have bought some vinyl wooden planks and wondered how thick to screed the adhesive. Is a 3mm spreader ok or would it need to be deeper.

Have you bought Karndean or is it another vinyl flooring?
The size of trowel will depend on the type of adhesive you are using.
Whichever vinyl you have bought the manufacturer should give fitting instructions that include the different types of adhesive that may be used.

Whichever vinyl you have bought the manufacturer should give fitting instructions that include the different types of adhesive that may be used.
And the manufacturer will probably specify what adhesive trowel notch dimensions should be, its their favourite 'get out clause' if things go wrong, they will always measure the adhesive trowel notches for width and depth when investigating a fitted complaint associated with lifting etc.
