Lead flashing discolouration/cleaning

Hello,

I have what looks like rust patches on lead flashing, but I didn't think lead could rust. I've looked at it closely with a ladder and it's not corrosion or pitting. The flashing is 7 years old.

I have attached two photos, these are from different areas of the house.

The reason I've noticed it is that the flashing in the first picture has mortar staining all over it, and I was looking to see if I could clean that off, then I noticed the "rust" patches.

So are the brown patches anything to worry about and is there anything I could do to remove them and the mortar staining?

I tried gently with wire wool, but it seemed to scratch the lead and create lighter patches. So I stopped.

Thanks,

Bob
