I suppose "drop ceiling" is what we call a suspended ceiling?
Difficult to do safely yourself. You don't want to burn it off or abrade it. I know an old builder who has brain damage from lead poisoning from that kind of thing
I would probably try to knock off the old plaster; else decorate over the top of it and hope it lasts for another hundred years. If the substrate is not plaster you could use a chemical paint stripper. but don't let it drip on your hair, skin or eyes.
