I have discovered a leak which I believe to be coming from the heat exchanger. It is a weeping leak not too much volume and it looks like it has been occurring for some time. Is it worth trying Fernox F4 or equivalent sealant or not? Or is this more geared towards leaks in system rads and elsewhere. Or is there another type of sealer that would be more appropriate?

common problem, you need to change the heat exchanger. only takes about an hour from start to finish and is pretty straightforward. i would recommend you change the discoloured insulation panels too. helps to diagnose it quickly when it leaks next time and they can fall apart if they are really bad.

Replacing the primary heat exchanger in a gas boiler is a job for a competent person who would usually be gas registered.

British Gas are doing repairs for £175 (inc VAT) on any boiler at the moment (including heat ex's). VERY good price!
Edit... just checked. That includes Scottish Gas.
