Hi all, I have just renewed my stop cock and pipework downstairs in the toilet room, unfortunately the stop cock is leaking from both sides.

The nuts have been tightened very tight both sides. I put PTFE tape around the olive on the one side to see if this helped, but no luck. Do you think if I wrap loads of PTFE tape around the thread on each side this will work?

Slighly concerned I’m putting a lot of pressure on the mains inlet pipe each time I try something different, although it seems pretty flexible!

Ps - ignore the pipe at the back, temporary fix.

Thanks for your help, Paul

Is it leaking only from the gland nut ? Is stopcock brand new ?
PTFE on the thread of a compression fitting is pointless.

Thank you Terry. My bad, I had the wrong nut, gland nut is fine. It’s leaking from the compression fittings on both sides.

The stop tap is brand new.

Ive tightened them to maximum, I feel like if I try anymore it’s going to snap the pipe! Could this possibly happen if I’m using pump pliers to hold the stop tap whilst tightening?

Is the pipework (in and out,) copper ?
Classic DIY'er mistake is overtightening the compression nuts ,which disforms the olive, crushes the pipe, and leaks . Turn water off, remove the stopcock and examine the olives and pipes.
Showing us pics ( in close up )would be useful.

It is copper in and out. What are your thoughts on using a jointing compound? I’ve read reviews and alot of people seem to say abit of this on the olive works well?

If you have damaged the olive / pipe ,compound will do nowt .
Do you have very slight weep ,or constant non stop dripping from the joints ?

May just need slightly tightening up ?
Without seeing the pipe and olive we don't know if it's not tight enough ,or you have overdone it.
What diameter are the pipes ,15mm ?

I feel like I’ve tightened up as far as they can go, I’ll try again tomorrow and see what happens, but will probably resort to checking the olives and pipes like you suggested.

Diameter is 15mm yep

Thanks

I decided to use a push fit stop cock which has worked a treat, just got a very small leak on the isolation valve to solve now. I’ve put some water hawk compound on the thread and it definitely helped, is it worth putting more on, or PTFE tape?

Thanks for your help

Any type of fitting that uses an olive seals on the olive so fitting anything to the threads will make no difference.

Fittings from the cheaper end of the market seem to be poor nowadays and most I've used have required several wraps of gas ptfe around the olive to seal, I fit the ptfe as a matter of course now having had to remake numerous joints when not using it.

Thanks, I’ll wrap some PTFE on the olive tomorrow to see if that helps
