I recently replaced the flush valve in my cistern because the previous one (pretty old) began leaking a constant trickle of water from the cistern into the pan. I bought a fairly standard one from Wickes (push-button dual flush with a cable, internal overflow) but, having fitted it, it appears to have the same problem. I fitted it using a close-coupling kit with a rigid plastic plate fitted to the underside of the cistern. The backnut is screwed up very tightly using the spanner provided. Also, when the water level in the cistern falls below a couple of cm, the trickle stops so I’m pretty sure that the leak isn’t from the sealing washer but from the valve itself.

Any ideas or did I just buy a dodgy valve ?

Yup, you may have just bought one who's valve rubber seal isn't sitting quite right, if you can get your hand to the valve itself with a screwdriver, press down on it and see if it stops. Wouldn't be the 1st time I've seen that. Take it back for a replacement.

It is worthwhile spending a little more (sometimes less) on a branded make, fluidmaster to name one, as they are usually a higher quality manufacture.

Fit a Fluidmaster flapper valve. Available fron Screwfix, top or front button.
Little to go wrong, simplicity to repair in the unlikely event it does. Dual flush.

Thanks for the replies. I bought a Fluidmaster flush valve and new inlet valve for good measure. Flush valve works perfectly and I can't believe how quiet the inlet valve is (or how noisy my old one was). You get what you pay for !
