Levelling Uneven Walls

Just wanted to ask what is the best thing to level uneven plastered walls? Want to put some largeish tiles on, but there are a few dips/hollows.

Should I use browning, as used in plastering? Also, is it best to use a featheredge to level off the browning?

If its a bathroom or shower room then don't use browning or bonding as it sucks in moisture like nobody's business!

If you want a perfect wall to tile on then batten and board it taking time to shim the battens so they are true plumb and all in line with one another. The choice of board is then dependent on the tile size and weight and also on the room type.

Trouble is, it's a very small room, with plastered solid block walls. The bath fits exactly into one side of the room, the walls meet it down one side and at either end. Bringing the walls out would mean the bath wouldn't fit.

Is there no other recommended way of levelling a few hollow? Perhaps with mortar?

how deep are these hollows when you put a straight edge over them?

How large are the tiles your considering, and if you know it what is the weight of them per m2?

You cant put mortar over plaster really, pictures and more info on the sizes and differences would be ideal.
