Lifting a universal beam

Reporting back, in case anyone is interested. We got the steels up. Two as previously described. Not heavyweights but 83 kg apiece nonetheless. My help was delayed a day so I managed to get the first one up by myself, though it took a while. A stack of 23 blocks each end, lifting alternately and checking very carefully as I went. It’s easy enough to lift the beam to the side of the stack, place a block ¾ on and lift the beam onto it. The trickier bit is lifting the beam again with both hands and sliding the block properly underneath with your third hand (aka foot, knee, hip, etc.). The second beam we did on Sunday with two of us, which took about half an hour.

I mentioned that the steels were longer than the space between the walls. We did each one diagonally, then walked the outside end along the new wall, and slid the other end onto the padstone on the old wall.
