Light fitting dead

it can not be a break further on because that would mean the other lights would not work. it has to be before the light that is causing you a problem.

But seeing as it was working before it must be something that hapened when you touched it.

I would still favour the neutral is in the wrong connection in the previous light.

you also say that you have 240 v at the light, did you check live to neutral or live to earth?

You can get 240v from live to neutral if the neutral is a switch wire because it will go through the previous lamp but you will get no current so the meter will show 240v. take ALL the lamps out form this circuit and try checking for 240 across live to neutral
 
CRACKED IT !!!

The feed wasn't from the kitchen but the utility light, where a neutral was loose, tighted it up and bingo dining room light now works. Thanks to all those who took the time to help, much appreciated.
