I've just about to replace a standard light pendant with a new (fancier and metal one) and noticed that the new fitting has no earth connector. I think it doesn't need one as the Live and Neutral wires are double insulated (within rubber sleeves and in a plastic connector box). If that's the case do I just tape up the earth wire and leave it in the ceiling ?

This is probably a daft question but I want to make sure I do the right thing !

My advice is to put on your steel helmet and prepare for the in-coming!

In fact, I'm surprised no-one has fired a few shots over you bows already!

Anyway, trying to be a little more helpful, electrical cables are not 'double insulated'. It is the light fitting that needs to be double insulated, and if you can see a symbol of a square box inside another square box, you're OK. If not, a metal light fitting must be earthed and really ought to include some means of attaching the earth cable.

I didn't realise that you were knowledgeable about what the NEC says about this. o_O

If you still haven't left us, Adrienne, may I ask where you bought the light fitting?

She's gone!

Why do people come here looking for advice and then just bugger off?
